Community Seed Initiative

Target 4 - Halt Species Extinction, Protect Genetic Diversity, and Manage Human-Wildlife Conflicts

Seed gardens are created to increase the genetic diversity of native plant and crop species available for ecosystem restoration and food security. Our work is informed by the Society for Ecological Restoration’s International Network for Seed-based Restoration, and the Forest Gene Conservation Association in Ontario.

Target 7 - Reduce Pollution to Levels That Are Not Harmful to Biodiversity

Homegrown Society’s efforts to reduce pollution risk is focused on reducing stormwater runoff in urban areas by increasing the permeability of the urban landscape, namely by installing rain gardens.

Target 8 - Minimize the Impacts of Climate Change on Biodiversity and Build Resilience

Using native flora in urban environments improves water infiltration which can reduce flood risks. When selecting species for seed gardens, we have the opportunity to select genetics from more southern populations through assisted migration. This may increase the viability of seed and resilience of offspring in the face of a changing climate.

Target 21 - Ensure That Knowledge Is Available and Accessible To Guide Biodiversity Action

Seed gardens are places where people can gather to exchange knowledge about native plant species, ecosystem restoration, and urban agriculture. Through CSI we aim to build knowledge around seed stewardship and urban ecosystem restoration.
